The Woodland Garden - Memphis, Tennessee
CLIENT - Memphis Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION - The Woodland Garden at the Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG) transforms an extremely visible, but unused area of the MBG into an outdoor gathering space and showcase for native vegetation. The 1-acre site acts as the primary native plant exhibit for the MBG and allows visitors to see first hand how native plants can be used in a designed setting. Its naturalized setting complements the clean lines of Sara’s Place, a modern VIP and event space attached to the adjacent Radians Amphitheater, which hosts concerts and other large-scale events at the MBG. The Woodland Garden provides beautiful views from the nearby venues and provides a means for guests to spill out into an intimate garden setting both day and night. For education and outreach purposes, the site is equipped to serve as a living classroom for local students and other MBG visitors to learn about native plant communities and how to incorporate them into the modern landscape. In addition to detailed planting areas, other elements of the design include a 250’-long reconstructed stream, an elevated accessible boardwalk, stone pathways, sculpture, and site lighting.
